Just got back from a great trip to the east coast....saw a bunch of fantastic art, ate some awesome food, and walked ALOT. Oh yeah.......I also did a bit of drawing.

                                             Random airplane and subway riders

A great bar in the East Village called Niagara. Loved that sticker on the cash register, even if I didn't really know what it meant. (also, on the outside of the building is a giant mural of Joe Strummer........which is awesome.)

More random bits.....church facades, people waiting for trains, Saska.

Saska in the Mars Bar, and some random buildings.
As a side note, I've never been to a bar more full of completely wasted old men than the "Mars Bar"....it was both hilarious and terrifying. You seriously expected a fight to break out at any moment.

Even though it seems like I only went to bars in NewYork, it's just a really convienient place to get some drawing done.........
With that in mind, this was the coolest bar we went to......it's called Bedlam, and has a Victorian/natural history decor theme. PLEASE can we fly to NYC and have my birthday party here? Sooo awesome. Plus, I heard The Jam's "in the city" both nights we came here.......seriously, GOOGLE that shit (both "Bedlam" and The Jam, HA!)

Off to philly! Saska does crosswords while waiting for me to finish my snooty coffee.

Mutter Museum. A place tailor made for Saska and Matt? Could be.
I could have spent days drawing all the weird stuff here......as it was, I only had time for some quick conjoined fetus, scoliosis spine, gout hands, and syphilis riddled face drawings.
Sigh.......

Philly bar....random drunkard, who really wanted me to give him this drawing.

One thing that surprised me was how emotionally moving the historic things in Philly were, particularly the Liberty Bell and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

We made it a point to visit The Wagner Free institute of Science in Philly. I highly recommend checking this place out......a natural history museum set up in Victorian style. The Taxidermy, skeletons, and fossils are grouped in this amazing half-hazard manner that invites you to make connections based on your emotional response to the artifacts versus a more modern pairing of phylum and genus. It may be my favorite non art museum in the U.S........really great, and free. I wish it was in Portland.

This tour guide asked us how much we thought a copy of the Declaration of Independence was worth. Saska elbowed me in the ribs when I blurted out "twenty bucks".........then the guide said "about four dollars",
HA!! Score one for Matt!
Also.......food carts are delicious.

Whoa.....
The last few days have been pretty abysmal on the art front. So much so, that I'm reluctant to give any of these drawings their own post. I'll just bundle them together, with the hope that it will be easier to forget.

On the 6th (Sunday) I contracted either a flu bug, or food poisoning.......whatever it was I had one view throughout the day.

On the 7th (Monday) I thought it would be ok to go for a little bike ride.........and felt so depleted by Sunday's trials that I was wishing for this to pick me up.

Today I just gave up, and took a bath instead.

Inspired by yesterday's crosshatching experiment, I decided to try something similar with a more elaborate drawing........here are the results.
Started yith this pencil drawing of Greg Lemond winning the Tour De France on the Champ Elysees.
Added horizontal and vertical lines, no crosshatching.......then I erased the drawing.

Crosshatching to bring in the darks. Still  used only vertical and horizontal lines here.

Finally included some diagonal lines, and hatching, to give form and shape.

I added color at the end to see what it would look like.

I think with more planning, the color could really help to define the shape and structure of things, but as is......I just kinda threw it on without forethought.
I think this drawing could be pushed even further along with more structure lines, or maybe even redrawing the original pencil sketch...........hmmm.

030411 version 2

Worked on this after I posted the first drawing, and really felt like the second version needed to be posted as well.
I really like how the vertical lines evoke the rain.

I know, I know......ANOTHER cat picture? Lame.
Not only does this make me seem like a crazy cat person, which I'm not (ahem), but it's boring.
I was hoping to start March off with something awesome, but I'm in a creative rut............I'm heading to New York and Philly in mid March, so hopefully I'll return with some fresh drawing legs.
Until then, I'll have to be satisfied with furry models.
